HOW TO START AND GROW A MUSIC CAREER

Building a full-time music career is a difficult and complex process that involves a ton of work. That said, in today’s music industry with all the tools and services available to musicians, it’s more possible than ever to achieve success.

…That is if you actually know the steps and strategies for creating a music career.

THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS TO BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL MUSIC CAREER

Getting your music heard is EASY.

Getting people to support your music career is HARD.

DOES GREAT MUSIC + PROMOTION = SUCCESS?

In the past, a musician's career path had 3 steps:

Step 1: Learn to create and perform music.

Step 2: 'Get Discovered'

Step 3: Sign with a Record Label

This was a time before streaming and downloads.

A time when music had a ton of financial value, Record Labels had Artist Development teams to help their artists enhance their music skills and Musicians had only one thing to worry about,

MUSIC

This was a time when simply 'Getting Heard' could lead to success.

BUT GETTING YOUR MUSIC HEARD ISN'T ENOUGH TO 'MAKE IT' IN TODAY'S MUSIC INDUSTRY

In today's Industry, a musician's career path now has 6 steps:

Step 1: Learn to create and / or perform music.
Step 2: Learn the business skills and techniques to sell music.
Step 3: Build their music career.
Step 4: Discover how to make their music career successful.
Step 5: Grow their career into a full-time profession.
Step 6: Maintain their level of success / Grow their career to the level of success they desire.

Today, music has little financial value.

...regardless of what streaming services claim.

Record labels are no longer looking for musical acts to develop.

...they're looking for successful acts to exploit.

And the majority of musicians with full-time music careers are self-employed.

...even ones that sign with a label.

This means in addition to creating music, present day artists and bands are also responsible for creating their music career.

...and sadly, most fail in the process.

YET, MOST MUSICIANS DON'T FAIL BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY OF THEIR MUSIC, THEY FAIL BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO TRANSFORM THEIR MUSIC INTO A MUSIC CAREER

Although the glory days of the music industry are in the past, many aspiring musicians still pursue their music career using the outdated method of trying to 'Get Discovered'.

...aka Getting Heard.

Only their list of targets have grown to include curators, press, promoters, brands, managers, fans and the list goes on.

...Do you know what also has grown?

Starving Artist

THE NUMBER OF OBSTACLES THAT STAND BETWEEN MUSICIANS AND SUCCESS.

On their path towards success, aspiring musicians will face an overwhelming amount of musical, professional and psychological barriers they must learn to overcome.

...plus a ton of competition.

Simply put, the music industry is an overcrowded space and there's more content than ever for people to consume.

So if you want to stand out and 'Get Heard', you'll need more than great music.

You'll need a strategic plan for becoming a success.

...one that helps you cut through all the noise and earn a living wage.

You'll need a marketing strategy that helps you emotionally connect with people.

...so you can build an audience of true fans and not just followers.

You'll need people you can lean on and that will support you.

...for those bad days when you feel like giving up.

In short, you'll need HELP.

THIS IS WHY WE FOUNDED...

Musician Indie Coalition

WE HELP ARTISTS AND BANDS TRANSFORM THEIR MUSIC INTO A MUSIC CAREER.

No matter your talent, intelligence or self-confidence, every musician will feel lost, stuck and / or overwhelmed at some point in their music career.

...many have these feelings on a continual basis.

Yet, few ask for help because they feel the solution to their problem is as simple as paying for promotion, writing a better song or meeting the right person.

...but solutions are never that simple.

SO IF YOU'RE STILL ASKING 'WHY DO I NEED HELP?' HERE ARE JUST A FEW REASONS

➣ Because developing a music career requires knowledge and experience musicians don’t have.

➣ Because building an audience of true fans requires a marketing strategy that will transform people from a follower > fan > supporter

➣ Because earning an income from music requires both musical talent and business expertise.

➣ Because overcoming the psychological barriers that prevent a musician’s growth requires a community of unwavering support and encouragement.

➣ Because establishing a professional network requires connection and collaboration.

➣ Because navigating the complexities of the music industries requires expert guidance from a trusted source.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: OVERVIEW

Artists and bands accepted to our career development program receive a step-by-step career plan, administered by a career coach, tailor made to fit their personal needs and designed to help them achieve their professional goals.

Members then meet 1-on-1 with their career coach on a monthly or bi-monthly basis to discuss their progress, talk strategy and determine their next steps.

Between meetings, members can spend their time in the MIC Support Network, our online music community and workspace where they can get expert guidance and feedback, promote their music + shows, collaborate on projects + events, attend live trainings + workshops and receive all the support they need - or simply connect with our amazing members from around the world.

As our musicians encounter challenges and obstacles, we're there to provide them with the solutions or the help they need to overcome them,  so they continue on their path toward success.

HOW THE APPLICATION PROCESS WORKS

STEP 1: Apply to MIC's Career Development Program

Any musician or band interested in enrolling in our program must first fill out an application. Our artist application helps us get a better understanding of where you are at in your career, your needs and your career goals. Should you be accepted to our program, we will use that information to create your customized career plan.

STEP 2: Schedule an Artist Interview

Once you have submitted your application, someone from our team will reach out to schedule a 1-on-1 interview. The purpose of the interview is to get to know one another and to see if you would be a good fit for our program and artist community. We'll discuss your application, walk you through the phases of our career development process and explain the different programs we offer. And we'll finish by answering any questions you may have.

STEP 3: Acceptance

After you have completed the interview, if accepted to our program, you'll receive an email with your acceptance letter and instructions for enrollment.

*Please be aware to ensure our members receive the personal attention they need, spaces in our program are limited. As a result, if we're at full capacity and you are accepted to our program, you will be placed on a waitlist.

*Members on the waitlist will have the option of joining our private community where they can participate in our events and get access to our self-guided trainings.
