Welcome to Musician Indie Coalition
OUR STORY
Hello! Our names are Greg Ferraiolo and TJ Pederson and we are the co-founders of Musician Indie Coalition (MIC).
We spent the majority of our 15+ years in the music industry working for legendary GRAMMY award-winning composer, producer and musician NILE RODGERS, where we gained experience in nearly every aspect of the business, learned the techniques for managing a successful music career and record label and had the honor of working with some of the industry’s leading professionals and musical acts.
While working for Nile, we both started off at his production company, Nile Rodgers Productions, booking tours for his band CHIC and coordinating the live events Nile produced. This is where we got to work with artists like Prince, Billy Joel, Slash, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, James Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Paul Simon, Diana Ross and many more.
Eventually, we moved to Nile's label Sumthing Else Music Works, which specialized in video game soundtracks. At the time, the video game soundtrack genre was ignored by the music industry and the majority of game publishers only cared about their games and not about their game's music.
This gave TJ and I the rare opportunity to build a new genre of music and that's what we did. Over a 7-year period, we signed the majority of game publishers to Nile's label, worked extensively to promote game composers and developed customized marketing and sales strategies, which eventually led to game soundtracks outselling movie soundtracks.
During our careers, we've worked on over 200 soundtrack releases from franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Bloodbourne, Borderlands, Castlevania, Darksiders, Dead Island, Deus Ex, Devil May Cry, Fable, Fantasia: Music Evolved, Far Cry, Gears of War, Halo, Hitman, Infamous, Journey, Mega Man, Metal Gear, My Singing Monsters, Pay Day, Red Faction, Resident Evil, Saints Row, Street Fighter, Tomb Raider and Warhammer 40k, in addition to numerous artists releases.
That said, throughout our careers, anytime we would meet an aspiring artist or band or hang out with our musician friends, we would always be asked questions about techniques for building a successful music career. And like every music professional, we would answer with the standard industry response of 'Create great music, play live shows, make connections and build a social media following'. Yet, we knew the actual solution was much more complicated.
Our game soundtrack experience taught us the importance of having a recognizable brand and that each game publisher and composer we represented needed their own custom marketing and sales strategy for their release to be successful. Established franchises, like Halo, that had millions of fans needed a massive PR campaign and creative solutions to maximize sales, while new games from indie publishers required a long term marketing strategy to grow visibility and establish a loyal fanbase.
Then in 2016, we reached a point with game soundtracks where there was no new ground to conquer and TJ and I looked for our next challenge. We decided we wanted to create a structured career development program for aspiring indie artists that taught them about business. At the time, our goal was simply to design a program that provided musicians with personal attention, expert guidance, along with an easy-to-follow career plan that would save them time and money. And because of the financial hardships most musicians experience, we wanted to provide all of that for no more than the cost of a music lesson.
One year later, on June 9, 2017, we officially launched Musician Indie Coalition.
In 2018, after his GRAMMY win with Daft Punk, Nile chose to close Sumthing and focus on his music career. It was then TJ and I founded Skill Tree Records, a record label and distribution company specializing in the sale of video game soundtracks, which we still own and operate today.
Skill Tree Records is partnered with some of the industry’s leading game companies and composers including: Eidos Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, Deep Silver, Disney Interactive Studios, Double Fine Productions, Jesse Harlin, Mikolai Stroinski, Peter McConnell, Starbreeze Studios, Steve Ouimette, Studio Wild Card, Tom Salta and THQ Nordic, and represents franchises, such as: ARK, Broken Age, Darksiders, Dead Island, Deus Ex, Fantasia: Music Evolved, Psychonauts, Red Faction, Saints Row and Tomb Raider.
This allowed us to work for ourselves full-time and gave us the time and resources needed to expand the services we provide to the musicians of MIC. A task that we continue to work on today.
With all that said, although we both have had successful careers, nothing compares to the fulfillment we get from working with and helping independent artists and bands.
For us, there's no better feeling than that moment where one of our artists first begins to see signs of success in their career.
We're proud of the work we do.
But we're even more proud of the work our musicians do.
We are truly blessed to have a great family of artists that we get to work with each and every day and we are excited to see what our musical family can accomplish in the future.
...to be continued.
